An open letter to Snerdware, Inc.

by Dave on June 18, 2008

Dear Snerdware,

Are you still developing GroupCal? I feel like I am in a growing minority of users forced to use Entourage because of work or school servers, and would really love to have an alternative. I realize there have been significant changes in the framework of OSX 10.5, but as developer seeds of OSX 10.6 have been released for some time now, I am becoming concerned that my hope in a future release of GroupCal is a lost cause.  Please don’t stop developing GroupCal; I would really love to have a exchange integration into iCal!

Sincerely yours,

David Southwick

After sending this letter, it was 500. Snerdware mail servers no longer receive email. Sad times.

Office 2008 update sp 1 kills Office for some

by Dave on May 14, 2008

After updating my office 2008 to the new Service Pack 1, I fell victim to the relatively common ‘setup assistant’ loop of death, wherein, after installing the SP1, office 2008 becomes completely unusable. -Not to fear though! Thanks to the help of some other victims from AppleInsider’s forum, I was able to restore my Office installation to working order. Here’s what you need to do:

Taken from: http://forums.appleinsider.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=86896

delete ˜/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office 2008 Settings.plist
delete /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist

Just another wonderful update from Microsoft. I am crossing my fingers for iCal exchange support in 10.5.3, and I will eagerly jump this [sinking?] ship.

I MISS QUICKSILVER

by Dave on April 6, 2008

I feel like my system is broken without Quicksilver.

As a audiophile, I use quicksilver to switch songs in itunes – from any application – and I am losing patience having to open up iTunes to accomplish this! Also, being cursed to use Exchange systems for email at my University, I dread any contact with Microsoft Entourage. I hate that program. Quicksilver made working with Entourage relatively painless: I did not have to actually open the program and select ‘new message’ then further navigate entourage’s cluttered address pane. I could just hit command + space and type a few letters of who I wanted to contact and BLAM! A new letter already addressed would appear. ARG! Damn the transitions between software versions! Lets recap:

  • Microsoft Entourage 2008 is horrible. Cluttered, Slow, and worst of all: Unstable.
  • I cannot use workarounds for group calendaring: iCal does not support exchange protocol like osx Mail.
  • -Why? This seems like a slap in the forehead.
  • Quicksilver does not completely support 10.5 = Unstable, lacking support for many apps (mainly, Office 2008!)
